Items
The Items list allows you to create, search, manage and update your Assessment Items.
Items are Assessment questions or content that you wish to use within your Online Learning Environment.
Items can also be Tagged or added to Question Banks. Learn more about Tags and Question Banks below.
To create Items, you can either author them individually, or add them to your Library whilst authoring within an Assessment Task.
You can also use the Items list to perform bulk actions:
- Select the Items you wish to action by clicking the checkbox for each row
- Using the ‘Toast’ menu that appears, click the Delete, Tag or Create Bank buttons
For more information about the Items list, please see the dedicated help article.
For more information about Assessment Authoring, please see the dedicated help article.
Tip: Items can be used in multiple Question Banks at once.

Question Banks
Question Banks allow you to group Items together and deploy the entire bank or a subset in an Assessment Task. You can specify an order to deliver your question banks in, or you can randomise the questions so that they appear different for every Learner.
Further information about Question Banks can be found in the dedicated help article.

Tags
Tags are used to help you organise Items within the Library. Tags can be used as filters both in the Library, and when inserting Items into a Task. Filtering by a Tag allows you to quickly find the Items you’re looking for and bulk-add them to a Task.
You can use the Tags page to View Items associated with a particular Tag, rename Tag labels, or delete Tags.
There are three ways to add Tags to an Item:
- Whilst Authoring the item using the Tags panel on the left
- Using the Bulk Actions menu on the Items page
- Clicking the + button in the Tag column on the Items page
Marking Scales

Marking Scales
Marking Scales enable Assessors to allocate points to Learners in a systematic manner by defining the ranges of points that can be achieved for a particular question, and providing Criteria for each range. For example, a written response question might award 0 points for a poor response, 1 point for a mediocre response, and 2 points for a high-quality response.
Like Items, Marking Scales can be created once and reused multiple times.
To create a Marking Scale:
- Click New Marking Scale
- Add a name for the Marking Scale
- Specify at least two Criteria
- Click Save
Once you have created your Marking Scale, you can use it for Items.
To use a Marking Scale:
- Navigate to the Authoring area for an Item (either within the Library, or within a Task)
- Search for an existing Marking Scale using the Select a Marking Scale field
- Click Save

Types
An Assessment Type allows you to categorise the assessment methods used across your Assessments. There are five Assessment Base Types available for you to use. These provide you with the flexibility you need for the different assessment delivery styles. Base Types can be configured into one or more Assessment Types so that you can apply different configuration settings to different scenarios.
Further information about Assessment Types can be found in the dedicated help article.
