To achieve a Skill, a worker must complete activities designed to train and assess the worker’s competence. These activities are configured within the Requirements section of the Competency.
There are several activity types that can be linked to a Competency:
- E-Learning
- aXcelerate Lessons
- aXcelerate Assessments
- Portfolio types
- Workshops
- Classes
- Other Competencies
Completing Activities
Activities can be completed solely through a Competency, or through a Class or Workshop enrolment.
Completing Activities solely through a Competency:
When using this option, specific Activities are added directly to the Competency. This is useful if the Competency is not tied to a broader Class or Qualification, or if you want full control over which Activities a Worker must complete. All requirements, including Prerequisites or Equivalencies, are set within the Competency itself. Workers will then see and complete these Activities directly in their Skills Dashboard.
Completing Activities through a Class or Workshop enrolment:
This option is recommended when the Competency is part of a Qualification, other accredited training, or when a Learning Plan controls the order of task completion. In this case, you don’t need to add every assessment or task into the Competency’s Requirements. For example, if a Class has a Learning Plan with ten assessments, you can simply link the Qualification (or Class) Activity to the Competency. The Worker completes all required assessments within the Class section of the Learner Portal, and once these are finished, the linked Competency is automatically marked as achieved.
A worker can locate their Class enrolment by scrolling down to the Current Activities section and selecting the class within.
AQF Competencies
An AQF Competency, either a Qualification or a Unit of Competency, can be added to a Competency as an Activity. When used this way, the system automatically updates the Skills Competency once the AQF Competency Activity is completed for example, when a Unit or Class enrolment is finalised.
This type of activity is primarily intended for organisations that are RTOs and are directly issuing against the Unit or Qualification and allows for tracking the Unit/Qualification within the Skills while also fulfilling their AVETMISS reporting obligations.
Note: If the activities must be completed in a specified order, then a Class Activity with an attached Learning Plan should be used instead.
We recommend using an Accredited Activity in scenarios where the same training is being used both for Competency recognition, for example, within a Role or compliance requirement, and for accredited training. For instance, if a worker is completing a First Aid qualification that counts towards their Competency or Role, using this option ensures that the training is tracked as part of Skills, while also being recorded and reported as accredited training.
The AQF Competency activity is marked as complete when the related enrolment reaches a status that indicates successful completion, such as “Outcome: Competent” or an equivalent status.

In cases where a worker only needs to complete a single SCORM package activity for a Competency, we recommend setting the package as its own Requirement within the Competency, rather than linking it to a Workshop or Class via a Learning Plan.
In cases where a worker may need to complete a series of SCORM packages in a longer, structured manner for a Competency, we recommend assembling the SCORM packages into a Learning Plan, which can be associated with a relevant Workshop or Class. The corresponding Workshop Type or Qualification can then be added to your Competency’s Requirements. More information on Learning Plans can be here, while more information on E-Learning and SCORM can be found here.
Note: At this time, SCORM activities are the only third-party E-Learning type that can be added directly as an activity. Other E-Learning options, such as Moodle, can be added to a Learning Plan which can be associated with a Workshop or Class type activity. Canvas E-Learning is not supported by Skills.
Lessons & Assessments
An Assessment or Lesson that is part of a Competency’s Requirements will be treated as an activity, requiring the worker to complete the specific assessment task.
Note: Only published assessments can be added as an activity.
As the worker progresses through the Lesson or Assessment their enrolment in the task will move through various statuses. These statuses will reflect similarly when viewing the Activity in the worker’s Competency.
Assessment Activities will check for specific statuses recorded against the worker’s assessment enrolment and display the relevant Skills equivalent as follows:

Information on creating a Lesson type assessment can be found in our Scenario: Lesson article and more information on Assessments can be found in the Assessment section of our help centre here.
Workshops
A Workshop Activity checks to see if the enrolment has a booking status of Completed within a workshop instance linked to the selected Workshop Type that is set as part of the Competency’s Requirements.
Workshop booking/enrolment:
If the Manager enrols the Worker into a Workshop, the enrolment is confirmed, however, if the Worker selects their own workshop then the enrolment will be tentative, and the Manager can confirm the enrolment if the selected workshop is suitable.
More information on creating Workshops can be found in our Workshop Management article here.
Workshop Activities will check for specific Booking Statuses recorded against the worker’s workshop booking, and display the relevant Skills equivalent as follows:

Classes
A Class Activity operates similarly to a Workshop activity, in that a course type must be set as a Requirement for a Competency, which will then allow workers and managers to select specific instances to enrol into.
To add a Class type activity, you will need to select Classes then search for a relevant Qualification.
When searching for the Qualification, enter the start of the Qual name rather than a keyword as the system will search for the full title.
Note: Each Qualification Stream is considered a distinct, separate Qualification for the purposes of a Competency’s Requirements. This means that if you have multiple streams of the same course, e.g. “Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)” and “Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability)”, you would need to select the appropriate stream for your Competency, rather than choosing a generic “Certificate III in Individual Support”.
Class instance enrolment:
If a Worker is not enrolled into a class instance by an Admin or Manager, then they will be able to select a class instance from a list of available instances for that Qualification. Only classes linked to the relevant Qualification, and with a Class Start Date in the future, will appear for enrolment.
More information on creating Classes can be found in our Class Creation & Search article here.
