Automatically Remove Symbols from Auto Generated Username

We've had a few students experiencing issues logging in. On investigation - we've found that the user name that was automatically generated by Axcelerate contained a symbol (such as a hyphen or apostrophe).

Can a development be made so that axcelerate automatically removes any symbols such as hyphens or apostrophes from user names?
