Dynamic fields for Portfolio items in templates

I would like to suggest that dynamic fields are made available for the portfolio items in templates. We are looking at creating workflow reminder emails for expiring portfolio items but at this stage we will have to create a workflow for each portfolio type and have to be very generic in the templated text.
