dynamic student reminders with workflow on renewable short courses

We send renewal reminders to our students through the workflow engine when their certificates are due to expire ( this is sent via a per workshop trigger) . However there is currently no way for the system to recognize that a student has re-enrolled and adjust the reminders to only send for the most recent course.    This means that students continue to receive reminders for courses that they have already renewed.  

We would like to either the option to automatically override previous course reminders when a  student re-enrols in the same UoC/ Workshop  so that they receive reminders for the most recent course only

OR to manually turn off workshop trigger based reminders for individual students without unsubscribing them completely

  How often are you sending reminders to the same student?

  Do you only stop sending reminders if they re-enrol?

  Are these accredited courses/subjects?
  
  Have you tried using the validity period setting in the subjects and running the workflow based on a report using the expiry date fields?

  Do you use the max every days field in the workflow?
  
  There's probably a few options that exist but I guess it depends on how often you plan on sending notifications.
