Use AI to generate assessment questions

This article explains how to use the AI Generator to create questions for assessments within the aXcelerate platform. This tool leverages an AI processing engine to generate a variety of item types, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of your assessment authoring. This feature applies to types except for Lesson, Observation and Marking Criteria assessment types.

This overview demonstrates how to use the AI Assessment Generation when using aXcelerate classic navigation. Instructions on using this feature with New Navigation can be found below.

Getting there

  1. Select Assessments from the sidebar, then select Management.

  2. This will lead you to the assessment authoring section of aXcelerate, where you can either choose to work on a create a new assessment by selecting + New or continue to edit a draft assessment.

    If you are editing an existing assessment, once selected, open the assessment in Authoring.

Generating questions

Opening the AI generator:

Select Get Started from within the Add Item section to begin generating your content.

A window will open, offering you the option to input text directly or upload a document containing your content.
 

Inputting Content:

Any information provided here will be sent to our AI provider to generate assessment questions.

or upload a PDF containing the content you'd like to use for question generation. We support two formats for PDF-based question creation:

  • Content document: If your PDF contains topic content only (e.g. a learner resource, textbook chapter, or policy document), the system will generate a set of assessment questions based on that content.

  • Existing question sheet: If your PDF contains a set of pre-written questions from an existing physical assessment, the system will extract those questions and add them directly to your assessment.

Tip: If you use the text input option, you can customise the output by including instructions before you paste the content, for example, specifying the type and number of questions you'd like generated. Please note that question generation currently supports Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, and Short Answer question types only. Other formats, such as Fill in the Blank or Matching List, are not supported at this time.

Click on Start Generating to initiate the AI-driven question generation process.

Reviewing Generated Questions:

  • aXcelerate, in collaboration with a third-party AI processor, will generate a set of questions based on the provided content.
  • You can expect to see multiple-choice questions, multiple-answer questions, and short-answer questions.
  • The system will automatically populate the questions, the possible answers, and select the correct answer for you.

Finalising Your Assessment

  1. Accuracy Check:
    • Once you have all your AI-generated questions, take a moment to review them for accuracy and relevance.
  2. Completion:
    • After reviewing and making any necessary adjustments, your assessment with AI-generated questions is ready to go.
