Canvas is a cloud-based online Learning Management System that integrates with aXcelerate. To integrate Canvas with aXcelerate you must first create a Canvas account and generate a Canvas API token. If you would like to configure the Canvas integration, please contact aXcelerate support to enable the integration in your account.
Our Canvas integration plugin is exclusively available for aXcelerate Turbo users. If you would like to learn more about Turbo, please contact our Customer Success team.
Tip: If you are currently using Canvas prior to integrating with aXcelerate, we recommend that you contact your onboarding consultant to verify that the integration will be compatible with your existing Canvas setup.
Note: Please be aware that aXcelerate does not provide help or support for configuration or troubleshooting your Canvas account. We can only offer support for the following Integration behaviors: Generating API Tokens, Importing Courses/Assignment Groups, Enrolling and Resulting. For assistance in use of the Canvas platform, please refer to the Canvas Help Guides.
Warning: The Canvas user assigned to the API Token will need to be linked to a Canvas course as a trainer assessor before the course will be able to show in aXcelerate. We strongly recommend that a generic Canvas user is created for the aXcelerate integration i.e aXcelerate User. This is to prevent the integration user from being deactivated as this would cause the integration to stop functioning.
Generate a Canvas API Token
- Login to your Canvas Account
- Navigate to Account > Settings and scroll down to Approved Integrations
- Click the New Access Token button
- Enter a Purpose for the API token (i.e: aXcelerate) and then click Generate Token
- Copy the Canvas API token by highlighting the token, right clicking and selecting Copy
Tip: You are able to optionally set an expiry date of the API token which will cause the token to stop functioning after a certain period.
Note: You must be logged into Canvas as as an admin user to be able to create an API token.
Warning:The generated Canvas Access token should be that of an Admin token, or one with all permissions in order for the Canvas integration to work properly in aXcelerate
Save your Canvas token in aXcelerate
- Scroll down to Canvas Integration Details and paste your token in the Canvas Access Token field
- Set your Canvas URL
- Select your Canvas Integration Type
- Click Test Connection to verify the integration is working

Tip: Canvas Groups and Canvas Modules are different ways of organising assignments in your Canvas account. Please consult the Canvas help documentation to determine which method is right for you.
Note: Every institution (or school) uses a specific URL to access Canvas. When you create your Canvas account you should be provided with this URL. Institutions follow a URL structure of [your institution name].instructure.com or canvas.[your institution name].edu. When setting your Canvas URL into aXcelerate you will need to include a forward slash ('/') at the end of the URL.
Warning: You cannot change the Canvas Integration Type after Canvas content has been imported.
